Up for auction is my Sendel Baby Bass. It is a modern copy of the classic Ampeg Baby Bass with a more durable body material and higher-output pickups. To find out more about Sendel (and hear sound samples) go here: http://www.babybasssendel.com/ The Baby Bass is a full-scale electric double bass with a cello-sized body made of a high strength fibreglass/plastic composite material. Ampeg user’s manual: http://www.corp.direct.ca/west/demo/bb/babybass.html Introduced in the early 60’s by Ampeg, the Baby Bass gained popularity with upright players in all genres because of its easy portability and lack of feedback compared to the regular double bass. It has since established itself as “the sound” of Salsa and Latin music, with its rich, dark thump. Because original Ampegs are scarce and often require repairs because of their advanced age, a number of Columbian luthiers make updated Baby Bass copies. Sendel is one of the oldest and most reputable Columbian Baby Bass makers. Many American Salsa players are using Sendel Basses. Original Ampeg Baby Basses command huge prices and often need repairs. I had this Sendel Baby Bass custom-made (with an extra-long adjustable endpin) and sent to Australia for over AU $2,000 just six months ago.
I have used it on a variety of shows and recording dates but my band is insisting on me using my big double bass (purely for the rockabilly look), and I need to finance the purchase of a bass guitar for another job. This bass is very large, but lightweight. The neck is detachable by design for travel purposes. I will send the bass packed with foam in two separate packages to keep postage costs down. I will include the soft case the bass came with and two sets of spare strings. When it arrives, you will need to re-attach the neck and set the bass up. I have had trouble finding a good instrument-repairer in WA to work on this bass but have got the instrument into good playable condition myself, installing French-made Correlli Low Tension Double Bass Strings. Still, I’m sure a good set-up from a qualified luthier would make this bass play twice as well. The electronics are in as-new working order and the bass is in great condition, but has a few little scratches from playing. This bass was made to be played! Please contact me for more info.
