Solid silky oak desk ~ with 7 drawers (with fielded fronts) and 2 extending writing boards.
Made from quarter-cut timber, this is a rare piece. The top is made of 3 slabs of solid silky oak, the extension writing boards and the outer sides and rear are all solid too. The only veneer used is in the inner sides underneath, where it is not noticeable. The drawers are dovetailed. Handles though not original, are made of solid brass which can be polished to maintain the shine. I purchased this unrestored from a Brisbane antique centre 10 years ago for $3300. It was black and I had it restored by a renowned antiques restoration expert, who brought it back to its natural colour. I was told the age was very early 1900's, estimated by the quality of the timber, as solid timber became scarce after this date and by the 1930’s veneers were more commonly used for large pieces. The top of the desk has a small cigarette ash burn stain which had been there for decades and a couple of light scratches. When restoring, it was decided not to plane the timber down to take these out as they are part of the character. It measures 152 cm width x 74cm deep x 77.5 cm high. For you purists, that's 5 foot width x 2 and a half feet deep x 31 inches high. My guess is the turned legs are a later add-on. The turned legs are solid silky oak so they do not look out of place. One of the photos is a slightly distorted image and makes the top appear bowed, it is not, it is rock solid and straight as a dye.
This is a regrettable sale. I am not a dealer, and not a regular seller, and am offering this for sale only due to having to relocate. Desk is located at Palm Cove, 25 kms north of Cairns and buyer will need to collect from that address.
