GENUS SOPHORA TOMENTOSA

Sophora tomentosa, commonly known as Silver bush, or Necklace Pod because of its interesting seed pod display, is a small evergreen shrub growing from 1.5 to 2 metres in height. It produces bright yellow pea flowers in terminal spikes from 10 to 25 cm all year round. They are delicately offset by soft, evergreen velvety foliage with hues of silver. This tree is seldom without visiting birdlife - it is very popular with the pollinators. It gets its common name from the attractive seed as illustrated.

This species occurs naturally in coastal locations, often on coastal dunes and is tolerant of salt spray. It is a hardy species that can take poor degraded soils, drought and intense heat in full sun. It adapts well to other locations, including dry inland climates. .It is a legume and as with many others in the category has good nitrogen fixing qualities making it useful for revegetation and restoring poor quality soils. It likes well-drained soils in full sun.
