The lesion that is caused as a result of infection may differ depending on whether the bacterium stimulates inflammation in the follicle or not. The most common trigger of pimples is puberty, when surges in androgen (male hormones) stimulate oil production and an increase in skin production. Other triggers include hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy or throughout the menstrual cycle; cosmetics, cleansing agents, and clothing; and humidity and sweating.
