A native of the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales where it prefers medium to heavy soils in an open, sunny position chiefly in coastal areas and adjacent ranges in coastal or littoral rainforest north of Mount Dromedary, NSW. It dislikes drought and frost.
An evergreen medium tree of 15 metres or large strangling tree whose height will depend on the host plant. It can have a large buttressed trunk or a massive trunk of smooth-barked coalesced roots. Young stems are glabrous (hairless) while the crown is densely textured and widely spreading. The leaves are glossy green, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate 3 - 13cm long, moderately thick, glabrous. with prominent venation on both sides but more so on the underside, with long petioles (leaf stalk). The fruit are globose, mostly 6 - 10 mm diameter, almost sessile (stemless), turning orange with dark red spots, paired and ripen April to June (southern hemisphere).
