Solidbody electric tenor ukulele
17" scale length - 21 frets

Handmade in Australia from Hoop pine, Australian oak and Sheoak.

The tenor uke is the perfect compromise... not as bassy and guitarlike as a baritone... not as plinky and chimey as a soprano or concert uke. For my tenor ukes I start off by working on the principles that I need a body timber that gives plenty of sustain but has a fairly dark sound as well as looking good, a neck that isn't shrill or chimey, a simple medium to high output pickup, and volume and tone controls optimised to give a good tonal range.

We're lucky that we have so many gorgeous timbers available in Australia, and many of them are great tonewoods for solidbody electric instruments. This one has the body in Hoop pine sprayed daphne blue with multiple layers of clear nitro. The 17" scale length Australian oak neck with composite nut has a Sheoak fretboard with dot markers on the top edge and quality Stewmac fretwire.

The tuners are chrome plated diecast units with chrome buttons. The volume and tone knobs are chrome Tele style on a '51 P-bass control plate, and the bridge has two saddles for adjustment of action height and intonation. The bright ceramic pickup gives a good range of tones and plenty of volume.

A tenor uke is usually tuned GCEA with a low G. The 1 3/16" nut has a 7/8" string spread. The string spread at the bridge is 1 1/4".

For this uke I've used the lightest four strings from a 10-46 set... D 0.026w, G 0.017,  B 0.013", and E 0.010". The action is medium, the neck balances perfectly and the sound of this uke is exactly what I was aiming for. Cool retro uke and a lot of fun - one of those instruments that almost plays itself!

If you're wondering about the feel of an electric uke compared to an acoustic here's a comment from someone who bought one of my concert ukes recently: "The uke arrived yesterday, and I love it! It's so cool-looking, and I never realised before how easy steel strings can be to play."
Some approximate specifications / dimensions:
Scale length - 17"
Tuning - GCEA
Strings - 0.026" 0.017" 0.013" 0.010"
Action - Medium
Length overall - 26 1/2"
Body width - 8 3/4"
Nut width - 1 3/16"
String spread at bridge - 1 1/4"
Frets - 21

I'm particularly proud of my longer scale ukes. They look great, they play great and they sound great. A baritone uke also works well as a small and compact travel guitar. I'm a small volume builder of musical instruments working from my home workshop in Adelaide, South Australia. My aim is to build good sounding, playable and affordable instruments and effects for people to enjoy using and enhance their performances.

If you're after a bargain baritone uke you'll often find reworked short scale kids' guitars on eBay. The pickup is usually close to the bridge, some just have a volume control, and the bridge and headstock are modified from six string to four string. I haven't played one but my guess is they're great value for money, they certainly look cool, and I'm not about to sledge anyone offering them.

But... If you're looking for a unique hand made Australian baritone uke, designed from the ground up to be a player's instrument, then I'm confident you'll buy one of my instruments and I'm very confident that the winner will be very happy with their purchase.

Your uke will come wrapped in brown paper, then bubble wrap, then packed in a strong recycled carton to ensure safe delivery anywhere in the world. One of my buyers said "Obsessively packed, shipped well." I think that says it all!

Here's a sample someone sent me of one of my ukes in action. Enjoy!
