This lamp is fitted to all Sony LCD rear projection sets that use the LE3A chasssis. The manufacturers original part number is A1484885A. The lamp has a life span and may fail after 2 - 3 year use of your televison. The lamp has a rating of approximately 4000 hours.

If you have one of those sets and you are having difficulty getting it started then there is a fair chance the lamp is exhausted. Common symptoms are a flashing standby led and this can be intermittent as the lamp can become lazy as it ages and may not always start. A sound no picture symptom is also a known result of lamp failure. On these models lamp failure can cause the set can also start for 20 secs with a normal picture and then return to standby and then restart continuosly. It is a good idea to remove the lamp from the set and examine it. If the glass rod inside the lamp is shattered then this is a definite sign of lamp failure.

What you are buying here is the lamp replacement kit as supplied by Sony. This is the genuine original manufacturers spare part. The lamp is supplied in the cage all ready to just slide in to the lamp slot on the front of the set. Sony do not supply the bulb on its own as you would need to dismantle the cage to replace it. If you purchase the bulb on its own elsewhere then it cannot be a Sony original part. It may well be an imitation lamp from China. Included in the box you get the following:

To clear up any confusion that may exist here a few facts regarding these models. This particular range of sets are LCD rear projection and use an LCD engine and one light source, ( the lamp ), to produce the image. They are not to be confused with CRT rear projection sets which use three fixed picture tubes, red, green and blue. Therefore only one lamp is needed to repair this model. The lamp is a user replaceable item and no special tools are required. A hexagonal key is supplied with the lamp to enable its removal.

This is how you replace the lamp on these sets. Firstly remove the set from the mains supply. Then identify the two large thumbwheels at each end of the front grill. These screws are mounted from the rear. Unscrew them completely, they will not come right out. At this point the front grill can be pulled forward. It has a few fasteners along it's length which pull apart. Strat from the right side and pull the grille towards you. Gradually work your way along towards the left, sometimes you need to exert some force to remove the grill, it will not easily break /snap. You will then see the lamp access cover to the left of centre similarly fitted with a thumbwheel. Undo this thumbwheel which exposes the lamp which you can remove by unscrewing the two hexagonal screws with the key supplied. The new lamp is simply pushed into the slot the old lamp came from. Refit the lamp cover and at this point you can test the set. If all is well then refit the front grill, again with the set switched off.  Please note that you cannot test the set until you have screwed the lamp home tight and securely fitted the lamp cover. There are safety interlock switches that prevent the set from working if they are not fitted properly.
