![]() Title: "Peach Blossom Sparrow" ARTIST'S STATEMENT Australian backyards are hosts to many amazing native and introduced bird species. This image is from a series of paintings which explores species observed at or near my home in the Hunter Valley on the eastern coast of Australia. Unlike many bird illustrations the characters portrayed in these paintings have been presented within a scene. Adding to the personal nature of the image and to its story telling capabilities, the viewer is invited to become an un-intrusive part of the birds environment. This is a portrait of a male house sparrow on a sprig of peach blossoms, Sparrows are a European species introduced to Australia. They are very common in suburbs. We have a colony of sparrows in our yard that nest in the tangled vines and back roof awning of our home. Each year sees a new generation noisily materialise. When I was a child my father bred birds and I learnt skills in hand raising them. Then when my own children were young we discovered a baby sparrow fallen from the nest, still naked and helpless. I had the pleasure of teaching my children how to hand feed it and keep it warm, it became a pet called "rattle-bones" until it became strong and feathered enough to fly away. This little bird offered them valuable lessons Since ancient times birds have been regarded as mediators between heaven and earth because of their associations with the sky. They are seen as embodiments of immaterial things, particularly the soul. Wings are often associated with heavenly beings the most obvious is angels. ORIGINAL ARTIST PRINTS
