Rewards: food, physical or verbal Appendix I am a mother and university graduate that has been to five different speech therapists with two of my children for these various reasons: · to learn to talk · to stop stuttering · to learn about expected language (feelings, expression and turn taking) · phonics · to increase underdeveloped language.
The very best practical hint that I can give you is to be explicit in all your actions with any child. Most children learn implicitly, they just seem to pick up easily how to do things. A child that has little language needs to be motivated to speak so we need to be great language models; speaking with beautiful pronunciation and in small sentences. Explanations of everyday actions need to be expressed in simple clear terms. Speech activities can be found in everyday actions even playing in the sandpit (or back yard) can be a speech activity. The little cars and trucks screaming down the sand road “vroom, vroom” “bang, oh no they had a crash. " Language is fun and speech activities can be fun too.

If you don't learn anything from the information booklet just return it for a full refundThis booklet is only a A4 photo copy of my self-published work, I am not a Doctor or expert on anything but I do have a degree in social science (if that means anything to anyone). If you buy this booklet you are not directed to a web site (as I don't have one) nor will I email a newsletter every week (as I don't do one) nor will you have to buy expensive DVD's, CD's or resources. This information booklet is about practical activities you can do with your child.More bookets (all under $10.00) are in my little ebay shop.On 27-Jul-09 at 09:06:18 AEST, seller added the following information: This is a page of activities directly from the booklet 1. Animal Noises Animal noises are fun and extremely educational especially for a young child that is not talking yet. If you are a quiet person by nature, start with little animal noises. Have your child copy the noise and action. This is wonderful for young children to make noise, change the shape of their mouths for the different noises and the lung expansion needed for big noises. Elephants, horses, dogs and cats are great. Go for it, be noisy and have fun. If you are creative you can make sock animals by drawing a picture of an animal on a sock, some children love this kind of activity. Other animal suggestions are: snake, chicken, lion, mouse, bird, horse, donkey, elephant, etc. Another way is to cut pictures out of magazines and start an animal book and then the child can look at the pictures while making the corresponding animal noise. Blowing bubbles is an excellent mouth activity and great fun too. http://www.shigleyfamilyservices.com/articles/encouraging-speech.cfm 2. Chewing Gum This activity was very scary for me at first, as we don’t give our young children chewing gum usually. However, the jaw action needed to chew a large amount of gum is powerful, try it yourself first. You could use steak if you don’t like the idea of gum. I did this activity at the dinning room table with a small plate in front of us ready to spit the gum out. It is even more fun playing a game of snap or fish trying to talk with a mouth full of gum, as the tongue needs to move the gum to the side of the mouth. Or colour in a picture together and try to have fun together while chewing. We found the big packets of gum best. The child needs to know it is part of the lesson not something they can do whenever they want to. http://www.pep-web.org/document.php?id=paq.021.0556a
