How to Use Glitter Eyeliner

If you've been turned off by glitter because it reminds you of bad 1970s and '80s hair and makeup, maybe it's time for you to give it one more chance. The updated version of glitter isn't as chunky as it once was. Besides, you can limit your use to only where you want it. There isn't any rule that says you have to slather it everywhere to make a statement. Try out these ways you can get creative with glitter eyeliner and maybe you'll no longer think that the only thing the sparkly stuff is good for are kids' school projects.

Step 1

Make eyes look bigger by running a light-colored glitter eye pencil on the rims of lower lash lines. Ideal hues are white, cream and other pastels heavily diluted with white. Make sure the glitter in the pencil you use is ultra-fine with no grit so that it does not hurt even if it gets in your eye.

Step 2

Substitute your eyeshadow with a glitter pencil. Smooth a glitter eyeliner on lids prepped with eye makeup primer. Color in the space from lash line to crease or even slightly past it as you would with a regular eyeshadow. Pat away any unevenness in the application with your ring finger.

Step 3

Add glitz to your regular liner. To jazz up a black liquid eyeliner, line above top lash lines using a clear liquid liner infused with glitter. Allow product to dry for about a minute before layering the black liquid liner on top of it. The effect you get is subtle sparkle that isn't too flashy. For more drama, apply the black liquid liner first with the clear liquid glitter layered on top of it.

Step 4

Amplify your eyeshadow. Apply your shadow of choice from lash line to crease. Blend to get rid of harsh lines and creasing. Layer a clear liquid glitter liner evenly over eyeshadow for sparkle that stays put. Stippling a messy powder glitter over your eyeshadow no longer need be an option if you've been searching for an alternative.

Step 5

Cheat when going for the no-makeup look. Glitter need not always be wild, flamboyant or even retro. If you lightly work a clear liquid glitter eyeliner into your lash lines in between your lashes instead of above them, you come out with eyes that boggle. Onlookers won't quite be able to tell what makes your eyes appear so dazzling despite the first impression that you don't have any makeup on. This works especially well if you use a liner with the finest glitter particles in silver, gold or both as opposed to one with flecks of a bold color like blue or purple.
