Star Trek - The Next Generation - Sketch Book

This book is in as new condition and has been sitting in storage since new due to house renovations. I'm a self diagnosed book junkie and have had a slight career change so I am selling my collection of 3d and animation books. All are in as new condition so check my other listings as I will be adding more books and DVD collections in the coming weeks.

From the book jacket
Pass the torch. Bring together the best of what has come before and the grandeur of the present to create an undreamed-of future, a radically different look. Create a new ship. Give life to mankind's greatest nightmare, made of flesh and metal.
When the decision was made to take the hugely successful television series Star Trek: The Next Generation into the realm of motion pictures, the crew, special-effects artists, and costume and makeup designers knew that they had a wondrous opportunity and several unique challenges ahead. Could they translate this new crew to the big screen, while retaining the magic that made the series one of the most successful syndicated shows ever? Could they create even more "strange new worlds" and vistas for them to explore, on a scale that would inspire awe in its legion of fans? And, most crucially, in its maiden voyage, could they meld the two "generations" of Star Trek? Could they find a way, visually, to pass the baton from The Original Series to the crew of The Next Generation?
Star Trek: The Next Generation Sketchbook - The Movies explores the hectic, frantic and creative works of the movie artists...first, as they valiantly endeavor to meet and overcome the challenges presented by Star Trek Generations, and then as they embark on the massive undertaking of The Next Generation crew's first solo flight, Star Trek: First Contact. The inception of the Nexus, the destruction of a starship, the horrific face of the Borg, and the design of the USS Enterprise-E all began with a single creative spark.
John Eaves, just one of the hundreds of craftspeople who worked their movie magic on Generations and First Contact, joins writer J.M. Dillard to take us on an odyssey into the mind's eye of some of the most visionary artists in the world of motion pictures. Through hundreds of never-before-seen sketches, model photographs and fashion designs, you'll see where it all began, and learn firsthand what it takes to transform the unenvisioned word into glorious reality.

Excerpts of copyrighted sources are included for review purposes only, without any intention of infringement.

Written by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Insurrection, Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis production illustrator John Eaves and Star Trek novelist Jeanne M. Dillard. This "sketchbook" contains interview-style structure, with comments by Eaves as well as conceptual designs, storyboard proposals, and behind-the-scenes photography. Artwork by Ricardo Delgado and Deborah Everton is also included alongside detailed looks at the evolution of key elements of the first two TNG films.

Book Review: Star Trek, the Next Generation Sketchbook: The Movies, Generations & First Contact

The sketches contained in this book are from the two Star Trek Movies (wikipedia link), Generations and First Contact. There are two cover versions and the one I have isn't the blue one.

John Eaves is the main artist who walks through the ship concepts, explaining the design inspiration and consideration. He and the other artists contributed more than hundred pieces of mechanical drawings. There are both approved drawings as well as discarded ones, such as the ship that looked like a chicken from top.

In addition to the line art blueprints of the ships, there are also concept art sketches for weapons, props, sets, storyboards, the characters and multiple photos of sets and models. The mechanical drawings of the ships are incredibly detailed, going down to where the different types of rooms are located. The sculpted models are equally detailed and are used in the movies themselves.

This book is suited for model collectors and concept artists.

The ships included are:

  • U.S.S. Enterprise-B
  • Enterprise-B Sets
  • Lakul
  • Stellar Cartography Platform
  • Amargosa Observatory
  • Enterprise-E
  • Enterprise-E Sets
  • Phoenix pod
  • Borg Sphere and Cube
  • Vulcan Lander
  • Quantum Torpedo Launcher
  • Other minor props and sets
