In February, 1970, ten students dissatisfied with their public and private "progressive" schools in New York City set out with their parents to start their own high school.  Six months later, in an abandoned storefront scheduled for demolition, they held their first classes in the Elazabeth Cleaners Street School.

The students ranged in age from tweleve to seventeen.  They were neithr drop-outs nor problem students.  some were at the top of their classes.  Others were regarded as :underachievers".  What bound them all together (and their parents as well) was a common dissatisfaction with conventional schooling.

This book simply, honestly, throughly describes the first yera of their alternative high school from the separate points of view of the students, parents and teachers.
