Stolen Apples, poetry by Yevgeny Yevtushenko (with English adaptations by James Dickey, Geoffrey Dutton, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Anthony Kahn, Stanley Kunitz, George Reavey, John Updike, Richard Wilbur).  Hardcover book (no dust jacket) published by W.H. Allen 1972, 328 pages ‘I want to be a mailboat for everyone divided by the ice of estrangement, a craft before the coming of large navigation, moving through the drifting ice with letters and parcels.’ Thus writes Yevtushenko, and the book that he introduces with those words is an important affirmation of that principle, a collection of his best and favourite poems, chosen by himself. Appropriately, all the translators are themselves poets of the first rank: James Dickey, Geoffrey Dutton, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Anthony Kahn, Stanley Kunitz, George Reavey, John Updike, and Richard Wilbur. In his own introduction Yevtushenko outlines with elegant lucidity the purpose of his work. 'I sometimes deeply resent being discussed basically as a political personality, and not as a poet.' He does not want 'to be free from the struggle for freedom ... But I do want to be free to determine the forms it will take.' It is political dilettantes like himself, he argues, and not the professionals, who advance the course of history. ' ... the revolution in human consciousness will never end.' etc etc.  This book is in very good condition.  The cover is in very good condition.  There is some minor wear to the corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. The book itself is in very good condition. There are some marks and foxing to the outer edges. The front endpaper has a name written on it. There is some yellowing of the pages.  Overall a very good copy.
