The degree of finish, and precision to this superbly carved box is second to nothing I have handled before. The pictures will convey this best of all below. A repeated central medallion further attests to the carvers advanced artisan skills. The box features an unusual lid, fitted to sit slightly stepped in from the front edge- a deliberate and attractive feature. Charmingly the box bears a neatly carved inscription to underside of the lid.
'schones um schones
und
gute um gute'
This loosely translates as "The most beautiful of the beautiful, and The best of the best." This probably denotes the box was made for a lover, girlfriend or wife? I am no expert on timber species however it’s a nicely open grained lightweight hardwood, somewhat like a cedar or similar, and is in excellent condition as shown.
A truly beautiful, romantic piece that would make a superb jewelry or trinket box today.
