this is I believe a compass used for surveying puposes and for establishing hights of structures, it can of course also be used for military and/or nautical puposes.
it has two levels inside (working) in order to establish horizontal and a natural sine converting table on the front cover.
there is a bottom section with a conical rim, which allows it to be connected firmly to a tripod.
here you also find a lever to move the levels inside the housing underneth the neddle.
a plunger on the side of the housing arrests the needle when operated manually and when the lid is closed,
in order to protect the mechanism during tansport or to fix a reading when in use.
mechanism, cover plate and mirror are in perfect condition.
the housing is 7cm (3") diameter by 3.5cm (1.5") and solid brass - machined out of one piece.
it comes in a wooden box that lookes like rosewood or cherry, maybe light mahoganny to me,
but I can't be sure here.
box is in unmarked condition, no cracks.
