Their first album "Talking Heads 77" is considered a milestone of New Wave. Their melodies may be labelled pop, though that would only scratch the surface. While Byrne’s voice sounds coldly elegant and claustrophobic, their arrangements are not meant as valves of emotion, but aimed at provoking intellectual tension. A no-frills, professional attitude was the band’s answer to punk rock and the complex scores of the supergroups. In the late 1970s, David Byrne gradually took over the helm. Inspired by exotic musical styles, he intensely studied different rhythms. The result may be a bit more danceable, but it’s still unmistakably Talking Heads. While that period marked the band’s creative peak, their greatest commercial success was yet to follow: their 1984 album titled "Stop Making Sense."
