This book is part of the Australian Ethnic Heritage Series.  It is a very hard to find edition and usually has a high asking price when available.  This is a great opportunity to pick up a copy at a cheap price!

The Americans had barely begun to shape the course of their own history when they were first involved in the destiny of Australia.  The first Americans in Australia arrived with Captain Cook in 1770 and were followed by the first United States ship Philadelphia to enter an Australian port, reaching Sydney in 1792.  Some American whalers and sealers were common in Australian waters.  The American seamen however, brought prosperity to Sydney, just as the 'R and R' boys from Vietnam were later to bring prosperity to Kings Cross.  Before 1810, immigration of Americans to Australia had been insignificant but in the years 1851 - 6 more than 10,000 persons from the US arrived in Sydney and over 8000 in Melbourne.  They entered the goldfields and American miners were in all the big Australian gold-rushes.  They were present at Eureka during the rebellion where they formed the Independent Californian Rampers' Revolver Brigade.  Merchants were the basis of the American community:  Freeman Cobb started the coach transport; others introduced road systems, wharf facilities, washing of streets, fire brigades and telegraph.  Further, they helped to improve mining, introduced machinery and new industrial methods.  Those Americans who stayed integrated well into Australian society.  Friendly visits of the Navy became frequent, cementing the friendship with Australia.  The greatest influence by Americans was witnessed during the Second World War, when some 12000 Australian brides of US Servicemen went to the US.  Since the end of the Second World War some Americans have settled in Australia and like their predeccessors have made an impact on their adopted country.

This 165 page hardcover is illustrated with black and white photographs.  This book measures approximately 14 x 21 cm.  It is ex-library and as such has all the usual stamps and stickers, however there are no external markings.  Internally there is a patch of superficial wear inside first page  where library pocket has been removed and some small pieces of residual tape inside front and back cover where plastic covering has been removed.  This book has had very little use and is otherwise in a very good, tight, clean condition inside and out.  A great buy at a fraction of the normal asking price!

Postage quoted is for within Australia. Overseas customer are more than welcome to email me for a postage quote.
