'One of the least known, the most hostile land yet most beautiful areas in the world. Its history and geography are untidy, stark and violent.' So Richard Hough describes the wilderness of Tierra del Fuego, the broken lands where, until 1520, it was assumed by the men of the western world that an unbroken territory stretched southward to Terra Australis, the great apocryphal land mass. Ferdinand Magellan penetrated this world and left behind him an imperishable name: Francis Drake discovered that in this quarter America came to an end, that 'the Atlantic Ocean and the South Sea meet in a large and free scope'.
Richard Houkgh also knows lthe wilderness, at first hand. On his own initiative, and with the aid of the Chilean and Argentine air and naval forces, he recently explored all the areas and waterways where the first pioneers tentatively sought a new route to the fabulous East and often starved, died, or were massacred. It is a hard tale he has to tell, a tale of the worst journeys in the world, ending up so often in death and frustration - but sometimes in triumph. The men who triumphed, in their tiny cockleshells, were our ancestors, and no trip to the moon could have been more daring than what these pioneers achieved.
The maps of the terrible Cape Horn landscape are now enriched by their names; Richard Hough has enriched their memory by a narrative which, while exploring their history, speaks with feeling of shores and gulfs and islands where he shared what they suffered. His book is illustrated by his own photographs: photographs of a world which has hardly changed since Magellan and Drake were wind-tossed to their destiny.
This book is ex-library and as such has all the usual stamps and stickers internally and externally. The cover also has a contact covering, a small patch of wear to bottom spine edge (please see photograph) and some light marks. Internally some of the pages do have marks (as is often the case with ex-library books), but it is still in a tight condition and this is still a good reading copy, and a fascinating read!
