THE BONNIE & CLYDE BOOK Bonnie and Clyde was the film which took moviegoers by storm in 1967. The sheer style of its direction (by Arthur Penn) and quirky, unexpected brilliance of the screenplay (by David Newman and Robert Benton) combined to make it not only a world wide box office success but also an immediately recognisable part of American folklore. The time is the 'thirties, the Great Depression; the place is the American south-west with its poor farms and failing banks; the protagonists are the legendary Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) and Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty who also produced) leaders of the Barrow gagng, who had a brief and gory career of robbing banks and shooting it out with policemen. There is a certain comedy in their exploits, but the violence and pain of their killings and their own final death have a reality and truth which the American film had rarely achieved before. But the screenplay only accounts for half of The Bonnie and Clyde Book. How and why it was made, the furore it caused, the morality or immorality of Arthur Penn's depction of violence; all this is included. To set the record straight, director Arthur Penn, producer Warren Beatty and writers David Newman and Robert Benton have all contributed original material to the book, and further long interviews with Penn and Beatty provide invaluable background materal. All of which, with Pauline Kael's shrewd and detailed analysis of the film, makes The Bonnie and Clyde Book the complete dossier on this far reaching film.
