THE FOLLOWING TAKEN FROM INSIDE JACKET FLAP:

THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH
Thomas Keneally

Powerful, tense and gripping, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is a return by Thomas Kenally to the mythology of Australian history and folklore in which he scored so notable a success with Bring Larks and Heroes.
On 23rd July 1900, at Breelong near Gilgrandra, New South Wales, an aboriginal named Jimmy Governor began to take revenge for injuries that his employers had done to him, or, some say, for insults that were offered to his white wife.
Remembered for their courage and ingenuity as well as their ferocity, the Governors are called the Blacksmiths here, and the novel does not purport to be an exact history of the Governors but rather a free and fictional interpretation of the terrible drama in which they became involved.
It is at once an exceptionally penetrating study of the characters and problems of white men and aborigines of the period, and a most vivid recreation of the Blacksmiths' hunted lives as they flee from the police into the wild mountains of New England.

". . . a compelling pace, but the finer points of characterisation and relationship are never sacrificed to the demands of the action."
