THE CUT OF MEN'S CLOTHES 1600 - 1900
A Rare First Edition Copy of Norah Waugh's Book
The history of costume shows a continuous evolution through cut and construction, each change of line deriving from its predecessor. In Corsets and Crinolines, Norah Waugh studied the fundamental shapes of women's clothes. Her new book traces the evolution and style in men's dress through a sequenceof diagrams accurately scaled down from patterns of actual garments, many of them rare museum specimens. The plates have been selected with the same purpose. Some are photographs of suits for which diagrams have also been given; others, reproduced from paintings and old prints, show the costume complete with its accessories. Quoations from contemporary sources supplement her text with descriptions of men's clothes, comments on fashion, details of bills. The few early techinical books on tailoring known to exist are surveyed, with a judicious selection of quotations and diagrams.
Norah Waugh lectured on, and supervised practical work on, historic costume in the Theatre Departmenbt of the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London; in the late 1930s she was also in charge of costume at the London Theatre Studio run by Michel Saint-Denis. Her book is not only a work of reference for those engaged in practical work, its supplies a logical guide for all who are interested in the history of dress.
