This is a hard to find book.  Don't miss this great opportunity to pick up a cheap copy!

The Great Japanese Earthquake of 1923.

It was almost noon in the picturesque city of Yokohama on Saturday, September 1st, 1923, and the author of this book was seated in his office, preparatory to closing for the day and walking to the Club for the routine Saturday gathering, when the first sickening sway of one of the world's most destructive earthquakes was felt.  For perhaps half a minute the fabric of the building held, and then it began to disintegrate.  The first great shock lasted for four minutes and in that time every building in the city was destroyed, together with 100,000 of its Japanese inhabitants and one eighth of its foreign community.

Other shocks followed and then fire - a fire that swept through the ruins with hurricane speed, suffocating hundreds that took shelter in the remains of solider buildings, and burning to death many thousands pinned down in the general wreckage or vainly trying to flee.

This is the story of the disaster, told by a survivor, of his search for wife and children, relatives and friends, of their flight from the fire, their escape down the cliffs to the shore, and their eventual rescue by the ships in the harbour.  It is a gripping narrative, simple but accurate and clearly authentic, having been originally written immediately after the earthquake and here published with only minor additions and corrections.

This 135 page hardcover is illustrated with black and white photographs.  This book is ex-library and as such has all the usual stamps and stickers, however external markings have been removed.  The dustjacket has some creases, edgewear, fading to spine and light marks to back cover.  Internally the first page has been torn out to remove library pocket (no text on this page), browning to page edges due to age, a biro circle around last page number.  There is the odd page with a light mark, but none of the usual grubby finger marks so often associated with ex-library books.  It is otherwise tight and clean and a great opportunity to pick up a cheap copy of this hard to find book.
