For sale is 'The Labourers' Friends' - Sisters of Mercy in Victoria and Tasmania - by Maree G. Allen. In hard cover format with dust jacket the book was published by Hargreen Publishing in 1989 and is a first edition. There are 242 pages including b&w plates.
A fascinating presentation of 140 years of Australian social history as seen through women's eyes. The book documents the work of the Sisters of Mercy in Perth from 1846, moving to Melbourne in 1857 (then in the throes of gold mania) and subsequently spreading throughout Victoria and Tasmania. Though it focuses on the pioneer years, the book brings a perspective up to the time of publication.
The dust jacket has edge wear and there is a faded area across the top at the back.
