Brett Evans set out to gauge the health of the party, visiting frontbenchers, former leaders and ordinary party members, witnessing party conferences and delving into the party's recent history. He talked to three generations of Labor activists, watched as the party's internal working were exposed by the Shepherdson Inquiry, and looked behind the party's  enduring self images. The result is a compelling portrait of Australia's oldest political party as it wrestles with the future.
