THE MEANINGS OF MODERN ART

Hard to Find Out of Print Book by John Russell

The Meanings of Modern Art is built, John Russell tells us, on two beliefs: One is that in art, as in the sciences, ours is one of the big centuries. The other is that the history of art, when propertly set out, is the history of everything.

Everything in this case means not only painting, drawing and sculpture but political and military history, poetry, music, drama and the novel, psychoanalysis, philosophy, architecture, the migration of whole peoples and the waxing and waning of the wll and the ability to master life in is entirety. It is in one or another of these contexts that John Russell surveys the art of the last hundred years and more. The major movements are surveyed in art historical terms, but they also come alive as cultural constructs that were fundamental to the life of their time. The major artists are examined, likewise, in terms of their individual works; but they are also seen as the leaven which caused the dough of life to rise. The life of artists thus scrutinized runs from Manet, Monet, Degas and Cézanne, through Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian and Paul Kleeto Antony Caro, Jasper Johns, Robert Smithson, R B Kitaj and Bridget Riley.

But The Meanings of Modern Art is not primarily an 'art book'. It is a hsitory of the last hundred and more years that happens to take art as its first point of reference. And it is the work of a born communicator, art crtitic John Russell.
