The Meanings of Modern Art is built, John Russell tells us, on two beliefs: One is that in art, as in the sciences, ours is one of the big centuries. The other is that the history of art, when propertly set out, is the history of everything.

The life of artists thus scrutinized runs from Manet, Monet, Degas and Cézanne, through Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian and Paul Kleeto Antony Caro, Jasper Johns, Robert Smithson, R B Kitaj and Bridget Riley.
