The story of Dunkirk was in danger of passing too soon from the field of history into the field of legend - a fate from which it is brilliantly retrieved in this complete and authoritative account.  Making use of all the available sources, published and unpublished, the author has carried out a complete survey not only of the evacuation itself but of the entire campaign to which it formed the finale; and of the political background against which the tragedy was played out.  In the course of it he explodes a number of myths which have gained too wide a currency: the myth that it was Brooke not Gort who was the saviour of the BEF; that the RAF achieved qualitative air superiority over Dunkirk; that the evacuation was a makeshift miracle achieved by the unco-ordinated gallantry of the 'little ships'.  From the fighting retreat of the British Army to the brilliantly planned and executed naval operation which cleared the beaches, the story is told with superb clarity, completeness and conviction; and in the concluding chapters the entire operation is discussed and summarised from the points of view not only of the British but of the French, the Belgians and the Germans.

Hard-hitting but always fair, trenchant in opinion but painstakingly accurate over facts, Divine has produced a compellingly readable story which at the same time is the definitive account of Dunkirk.

This 320 page softcover is illustrated with black and white photographs.  It has creases, marks and wear to cover and there is a 1cm split to bottom edge of spine.  Internally there is browning to page edges due to age, but it is otherwise tight and clean.

Postage quoted is for within Australia. Overseas customers are more than welcome to email me for a postage quote. Local Pick up is not available.
