ALADO A2 FOR STAYS TO 12m x 8mm DIAMETER What every self-sufficient sailor dreams about - simple, strong, effective, user friendly. And very affordable. ALADO`furlers are guaranteed against failure for as long as you own them. Designed originally for yachts venturing into the Southern Ocean and the Cape Horn area where reliability is paramount, they have a minimum of moving parts. The US consumer-driven sailing magazine Practical Sailor (accepts no commercial advertising) has published a report on the ALADO furler (February-09) and concludes..."Elegantly simple, the ALADO furler is well-crafted and priced to sell." It adds "the units furling ease matches that of its much more costly competitors..." In its September-09 review of 11 furlers, the magazine's examiners chose ALADO as best value for money. The furler fits over the forestay as it stands without any changes to the rigging or the need to employ a rigger. You don't even have to go aloft.
The furler fits around the stay but is otherwise entirely independent of it with no harmonic or torque fatigue induced into the stay.
The genius of the ALADO furlers is that there is – NO rigging changes needed NO need to go aloft to install NO need to employ a rigger NO swivels or ball-bearings to fail NO harmonic or torque fatigue on stay NO mast-supporting role NO rigging loads imposed on halyard NO foil butt joints (slide together) NO joiner springs, clips, screws, glues, or rivets NO risk of halyard wrap Unlike other furlers, your forestay does NOT have to be threaded down a foil - the foils are in 2 halves which dovetail together longitudinally around the stay as it stands. It's just as easy to remove. There is a removeable centralising bush in the drum which leaves a 38mm (1-1/2in) hole for the bottom terminal/rigging screw. The foils then slide apart in reverse order. The halyard(s) return to the drum, loading the foils in compression free from mast-supporting tension. The drum spins easily on a high-density “non-stick” thrust washer and bearing. Halyard wrap cannot occur. The foils have no mechanical fastenings to wear, corrode or freeze. Being in compression, they are not trying to flog apart. They dovetail together with 50 per cent overlap, forming an aerodynamic profile with two luff grooves for twin halyards if required. This A2 model is suitable for yachts to about 10 tonnes displacement. It comes with 12m (40ft) of foils, comprised of eight sections of 1.52m (5ft) which fit stays to 8mm diameter. The foils weigh 1kg/m.The drum external diameter is 200mm (8-in) and it is 150mm (6-in) high. It weighs 4kg. The furlers come in 4 sizes ranging from 9m(30ft) to 25m(85-ft). Thanks to the ingenious easy-fit design, this no-compromise cruising furler also suits racing skippers everywhere who might want to cruise shorthanded on holiday with a reefing furler, perhaps to warmer waters for the winter. A high-tech light-weight racing foil like Tuff Luff can be removed from a rod forestay and an ALADO reefing furler fitted in a couple of hours.
It just as easy to change back to the racing mode, with no special tools or skills needed. ALADO furlers have proved particularly successful with multihulls where flexing hulls in heavy weather can cause mast-attached halyards to become auxiliary forestays under destructive loads. The smaller drums are sufficiently strong to be interchanged with the other foils for special applications such as motor-sailers, short-footed self-tacking staysails or high-aspect mainsail reefing. The main photo shows an A2 headsail furler on the seller's own 32ft sloop and another behind the mast as a mainsail furler. (Used behind the mast, the furler requires extra custom fittings.) The seller is the Alado representative for Australia and New Zealand and offers the furlers for sale on their behalf. His e/address is at the website www.alado.com. He can list for sale at factory prices any of the models. The A2 will be delivered from the factory in Brazil by Fedex to your doorstep within Australia in about 7 working days. The price includes freight, insurance and all taxes and duties in Australia. Please ask for prices to other countries. Please note: The Buy-Now price might be adjusted up or down during the course of this auction to compensate for volatile currency movements and keep the price in line with the US$ factory price.
