Thor Heyerdahl's Tigris adventure began in the Garden of Eden on the bank of a river that flows from Ararat, where Noah's legendary ark once came to rest.  It took him and his companions from nine nations in search of sea routes which he was sure must have been used by the ancient Sumerians 5,000 years ago on vessels like his own.  His voyage down the Tigris, through the Gulf and eventually the Indian Ocean led to many discoveries and included many hazards.  Modern shipping, bandits, reefs and politics dogged the expedition.  Finally with permission to land only in the tiny republic of Djibouti and unable to continue the voyage for political reasons, Tigris was ceremonially burnt in protest against the intervention of major powers in African disputes which resulted in death and misery for millions of local people.  This 379 page softcover is illustrated with colour photographs throughout and although the cover has some creases and a 1cm dent (resulting in a split) on back cover the inside is tight and clean.  A good read!
