This book begins with a man, John Harding, about to kill himself before he hears a knock on the door. It is the first human contact he has had since the events of his wife and son's deaths in a car crash.
The man at the door asks him if he wants to coach the baseball team that he, Bill, and John used to play for. Reluctantly, and unwillingly, John agrees.
It is through the coaching of the team that John meets Timothy Noble, a boy who will, throughout the course of the book, change John's life.
I will not tell you the whole story, and ruin the tragic and yet happy ending, but I do strongly recommend that you read this book.
