In spite of an enormous body of literature on the Victorian countryside, surprisingly little has been written on the lives of the farmers. The Victorian famer played a pivotal role in rural society, paying rents to the landowner and providing employment for the labourer. This Shire book explores the world of the farmer during Queen Victoria's reign, which was a period of considerable change on the farm as the forces of industrialisation made themselves felt. Using contemporary observations, illustrations and museum collections, the David Eveleigh looks at the everyday life of the working farmer and describes life in the Victorian farmhouse. The picture that emerges is more complex and fascinating than the romantic images that so often shape our views of farming life in this period.

The book includes suggested further reading and details of related places to visit in Britain. Illustrated with black and white photos.
