The Western Front -
Ordinary Soldiers and the Defining Battles of World War 1 |
On offer is this excellent study on the soldiers and battles of World War 1 on
the The Western Front.
This book is an enlightening overview of the war of
attrition on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918, which concentrates on the
major engagements and prominent characters from both sides to paint the broad
picture of this terrible conflict.
Holmes divides the subject of his book and series into six major themes, moving
from the making of the front after the first months of the war in 1914, through
the difficulties of supplying and maintaining the front line troops, the
stubborn French resistance at Verdun, the appalling sacrifices on the Somme and
at Passchendaele, right up to the final battles around Cambrai, and the breaking
of the front in the last days of the war.
The book includes maps of the major battles to give a idea of tactics and troop
movements, with Officers memoirs and conscripts letters that provide enough
information to paint a picture of the terrible war that it was.
The Western Front gives the reader the war on a variety of levels, from the
clashes of personality in the high command right the way through to the
miserable conditions for the soldiers on the Western Front and the indelible
mark this conflict left on an entire generation.
A must have for anyone interested in World War 1 history, so don't miss out on this one!
