John Dryden's poetry is in marked contrast to the exuberance, wit and passion of the Metaphysical poets a generation earlier. Dryden had lived through the turbulent years of the English Civil War, and his balanced prosody reflects a longing to return to an ordered society. His clarity of language, his balance of pharse and his cultivation of the heroic couplet influenced many of the poets who followed him.

Though his natural inclination to avoid extremism of any kind caused Samuel Johnson to chastise him as a professional opportunist, Dryden was a natural Poet Laureate. In the late twentietch century it may seem strange to express political ideas in verse, but the high wit and satiric bluster of Absalom and Achitophel show how potent and weapon this can be.
