TOO LONG IN THE BUSH - LEN BEADELL - 1966

This is the story - extending over three years - of how the author made the first road ever across Central Australia from east to west - 900 miles from the Alice Springs road to Carnegie homestead, 400 miles north of Kalgoorlie.  On the way he laid out Giles Met. Station and built the aerodrome there, then went on to skirt the dreaded Gibson Desert.

Beadell - using astronomical observations - would survey up to 250 miles of projected road on his own, in places travelling over country never before crossed by white men.  Then he would return to his five assistants, and the road would creep forward through heat and dust, over sandhill country and desert and rounding desolate salt lakes.

Alone in the vast emptiness of Central Australia most of the time, they saw only an occasional group of Aborigines.  As Beadell tells the story, however, his happy nature keeps the tale of their adventures bubbling with humorous touches that every armchair traveller will enjoy.

This 202 page hardcover is illustrated with black and white photographs.  The dustjacket has fading, heavy edgewear, creases and a tape repair to bottom front cover.  Internally there is original owner's name, but it is otherwise in a good, tight, clean condition.
