When first plugged in the display showed fine, all looked ok. However, after a few minutes a plume of smoke came out of the left rear of the top of the unit, so it was promptly switched off. An indicator that something was wrong was that the top cover and cassette tray lid are not screwed in place.

These players are much sought after worldwide, so there could be some useful components in this, or it might be a candidate for refurbishment.
