Title: "Just Lazin'" ARTIST'S STATEMENT This image shows one of the small Tree Frogs that frequent our back yard, seen resting on a broad, spiky leaf. It is from a series of actual frogs from my backyard. We have 2 small frog ponds in our yard, and every spring - summer we are entertained with these lively characters whose personalties come shining through. The sharp focus on the frogs eye and face makes the viewer know the frog is aware of their presence, but the relaxed slump in his posture appears lazy and reluctant to exert the energy needed to hide. This species of frog is often abundant in our yard. They are unafraid, loud, lively and often entertaining. It is interesting to watch them lunge into the air trying to capture insects mid-flight, bungie-jumping from their perches near the nightly beckoning beams of the florescent outdoor light. In the mythology of many cultures frogs are linked to cleansing, healing and creative powers. The change from egg to tadpole then metamorphosis to frog is often used to symbolise the awakening of ones creativity and recognising one's own power of adaptation. It is a reminder of our own ability to grow and mature when faced with difficult situations. A strong frog population is an indication of a healthy ecology due to their sensitivity to changes and toxins in their environment. Frogs therefore are naturally symbols of a peaceful, harmonious coexistence and interdependence with nature. Frogs because of this sensitivity serve as a strong lesson about our own interdependence within a fragile eco-system. Teaching a connection with the earth and everything on it. Sadly in some areas numbers of frogs seem to be dwindling. Folk wisdom tells that dreaming of a frog means good fortune, happiness and great friendships. May your dreams be filled with frogs...
