A POPULAR SELF CLEANING PALM




When we moved to Qld these were the first palms we planted.
We were told that they will spring out of the ground here even faster with lots of CHOOK POO.
So off we went to the nearest chook farm.






I really like the doubles as they add more character.
You can make doubles by simply planting 2 together.




All these palms have been in for 15 years now but they were even  a great height at 5years old.
That's when we stopped using  any fertiliser.

MY NOTES

Also known as King Palm or Alexandra Palm, an Australian native from Queensland, it is probably going for our award for the most beautiful of all palms. It is very hardy and loves full sun once mature. It has a striking green crown shaft and a smooth self cleaning light brown trunk. The flowers are cream to greenish, male and female flowers on the same inflorescence. Flower stalk coming from below the crownshaft, about a metre long, with bright red fruit. The leaves are shiny green with a silvery gray underneath and up to 3m long.

This spectacular palm will be equally happy in full sun or indoor shade. It is also a very good container plant for a patio or large courtyard as its growth will be slowed but it will still be happy and healthy in a pot.

Landscapers often place two Alexander palms in the same planting hole to create a jungle effect as the trunks curve away from each other. The same can be done in pots.

 
Care: Full sun to part shade. Quick growing - up to 1m a yr depending on your local climate. Likes regular watering but can handle most drought conditions. Mulch well (but keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent collar rot). Fertilise in spring/summer with an organic fertiliser such as manure and/or fertiliser specific to palms (3:1:3 or 3:1:2 N:P:K). Grows in all mainland capital cities, i.e. can tolerate some cold but not frost.

 
Pests/Diseases: Indoor plants may get mealy bugs - take outdoors for a week. You can also remove them by hand. It is best not to spray palms with white oil.
