Tamarillo or Tree Tomato

Cyphomandra betacea red

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of South America and food of the Incas, it is a member of the tomato, potato family (Solanaceae).

A moderately frost tolerant shrub which grows in the Peruvian Andes at altitudes up to 3500 metres. It is a quick growing, evergreen bushy shrub reaching 3 metres (10ft). The main branches spread out to form a rather flat top.

The leaves are light green, heart-shaped, large, floppy and up 25cm (10in) long unfortunately with an unpleasant smell. The pale pink, bell-shaped flowers produced in small clusters at the end of the branches are most abundant in spring and are produced sporadically through summer.

The plant is self-fertile with the first fruits appearing in early autumn. They are ready to harvest when they reach full colour, usually in late autumn to mid winter, occasionally as late as spring.

The fruit of this plant can be poached, baked and made into deserts, sauces, chutneys, fruit salad and curries.

Links to recipes are provided.

The seed offered has been bred to produce fruit suitable for a very growing export industry.

Offered is a packet of 30 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this unusual plant.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
