Hans J. Mayland Translated by and Adapted by Gwynne Vevers
The information necessary for the successful establishment of aquarium tanks and themaintenance of both freshwater and marine fishes is contained in this comprehensive survey, which combines a wealth of practical advice with a wide- ranging collection of beautiful and brilliantly coloured fishes.
Written by a leading aquarist, this book has been translated and edited by Dr Gwynne Verers, the Curator of the Aquarium at the London Zoo and, as a leading authority on his subject, the author of several works on freshwater and marine life, as well as on many other animals.
The firts part of this book is devoted to the freshwater aquarium, toto tank types and their positioning in the home, the equipment needee to supply heating, lighting, circulation and aeration, and to the great variety of plants and fishes suited to a freshwater environment. The author includes vital instructions on the feeding of fishes and discusses the distribution, characteristics and habits of a large number of fish families and species. The second part features the marine aquarium, with a comprehensive section on marine fishes, their environmental requirements and also covers some of the invertebrates suitable for the marine aquarium.
Over 200 colour photographs of the fish and their different habitats, line drawings of equipment, fishes and plants, and maps showing the areas of origin of the main fish families illustrate the subject indepth and provide a useful guide in particular to the identification of plants. A complete subject index is accompanied by detailed index of fishes, invertebrates and plants.
