The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, an abridged version, edited and with an introduction by Dero A Saunders, with a preface by Charles Alexander Robinson Jr
Penguin Classics paperback, 694 pages, 110mm x 178mm, ISBN 01404311896, postage weight 365g.

Good condition: wear and marks to the cover; soft corners and corner creasing; the start of a spine crease; yellowing pages; sticker marks on the back of the book; small discoloration from price sticker on front cover.

British parliamentarian and soldier Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) conceived of his plan for Decline and Fall while musing amid the ruins of the Capitol on a visit to Rome. For the next 10 years he worked away at his great history, which traces the decadence of the late

empire from the time of the Antonines and the rise of Western Christianity. The confusion of the times, and the scarcity of authentic memorials, pose equal difficulties to the historian, who attempts to preserve a clear and unbroken thread of narration, he writes. Despite these obstacles, Decline and Fall remains a model of historical exposition, and required reading for students of European history.

About the book:
No other historian has so eloquently and penetratingly portrayed the terrible magnitude of the Roman Empire`s descent into anarchy.

Now, with Dero A Suanders' compact and manageable abridged edition, Gibbon's masterpiece is within the grasp of ordinary readers and busy students.

Concentrating on the centuries from the age of the Antonines to the fall of the empire in the West, this volume chronicles the triumph of barbarism and religion in the disruption of the unified empire, the rise of Christianity,

the progress of the Huns from China and the revolt of the Goths.
Never far below the surface of the magnificent narrative lies the author's wit and sweeping irony, exemplified by Gibbon's famous definition of history as "little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind."

In his introduction, Dero A Saunders relates the author's life to his lifework, discussing in particular those events that helped shape Gibbon's concept.
