AN DIFFERENT SPECIES OF DESERT ROSE AND ANOTHER NATURAL BONSAI. GENUS ADENIUM ARABICUM THIS IS A SEED LISTING
The Adenium species is actually a succulent member of the Oleander family. They are found naturally variously in Southern Africa, in East Africa and from around the Arabian peninsula. The different locations give rise to somewhat differing forms.

Adenium arabicum comes from the harsh, dry, arid area around the southern and western margin of the Arabian peninsula. Those that we have seen in bloom produce a flower in the same large flute-like form as Adenium obesum but in a lighter softer pink. Generally speaking this species is stouter than Adenium obesum, with a thicker more bulbous caudex.

There are two distinct forms of Adenium arabicum. The plants are caudiciform in the more arid habitats and treelike in wetter ones.

The Saudi form may produce an erect trunk to four meters tall. Higher in the mountains the trunk is reduced to a massive caudex. The leaves are generally larger than those of Adenium.obesum, tend to be pubescent, and have very rounded tips.

Populations in southern Yemen are characterized by short, broad caudexes (trunks) and the largest leaves in the genus - up to 20cm long and 12 cm wide. The caudex can attain a meter in diameter.

In cultivation Adenium arabicum has a definite winter dormancy and seems to leaf out several weeks after Adenium obesum cultivated under the same conditions. The Saudi form retains leaves year round but still grows only during the hot season. Plants begin flowering at the end of dormancy in late winter and continue into early summer. The Saudi form has a major flush in spring but flowers sporadically all year. The flowers vary in size and pubescence. Those of the Saudi form are about 4cm in diameter. The form from southern Yemen has flowers up to 8.5 cm with very prominent pubescence in the throat.

The petals are bright pink with some fading toward the white throat, which has usually one nectar guide per petal. The follicles (at least of the Yemeni form) are much larger than those of Adenium obesum and dark mahogany in color.

As with all the Adenium/Desert Rose the swollen bulbous trunk is a natural bonsai, with no two plants looking the same.

Adenium need to have a soil mix of sand or brick chips mixed into regular soil, or a cactus mix. The soil should dry completely between waterings. For this reason clay pots are better suited for growing Desert Rose than plastic pots. Water sparingly during winter months.
