The Flying Pieman written by Alex Hood illustrated by Otto and Chris * * * FIRST EDITION & SCARCE * * * PUBLISHED DATE - 1974 PUBLISHED BY - Australian Broadcasting Commission BINDING - softcover PAGES - 52 DIMENSIONS - 24cm x 18cm WEIGHT - 100 grams (unpacked) DESCRIPTION / SYNOPSIS The Flying Pieman has the same form as that of its predecessor, The Wallaby Track; however, whereas the latter was about the lives of 'bush' characters, this new musical play draws upon some authentic characters of Sydney of the late 1840's. Many will find it hard to believe that the Flying Pieman could actually beat the Parramatta ferry on foot but, in fact, this was a comparatively easy feat for the Pieman. A few facts about this amazing man may give an idea of his athletic ability. In October 1842, the Pieman walked from the obelisk in Macquarie Place to Ireland's Inn on the Parramatta Road in three hours and eleven minutes. Incidentally, he was carrying a six stone boy and several pounds of shot. Later he walked the thirty mile return trip from Sydney to Paramatta twice a day for six consecutive days. After that, the Flying Pieman walked the forty-three and a half miles from Parramatta Church to Windsor Church and back on three consecutive days. The journeys took, respectively, eight hours, seven and a half hours, and seven hours and twenty-five minutes. Then, when he twice beat the coach on the thirty-four mile Sydney to Windsor trip, the Flying Pieman became on fo the most renowned characters in the Colony. In 1847 he visited Maitland, New South Wales, to perform a series of pedestrian feats. He was to pick up, within fifty-five minutes, a thousand corn cobs laid a yard apart. He picked up the last cob with two minutes to spare! It should be pointed out that sport of all kinds was the chief entertainment of Sydney citizens in those days and the main attraction of sport was its betting element. There are eight episodes in 'The Pieman' which, when put together, should run for about 75 minutes. The detailed piano arrangements contained in this booklet should provide a guide for teachers in the presentation of the songs and assist in the staging of the musical. Most schools have drums, tambourines and recorders available and the lagerphone and tea chest bass could be used successfully as well. I hope you find the experience of The Flying Pieman stimulating and fun. Perhaps it will also encourage students to take a look around their city or town and evaluate the heritage which exists around them.
