Basics
Personality
When asked to create a Sim, there are several factors to take into consideration, which makes up the personality of your Sim. After creating the physical appearance of your Sim (which is nothing more than eye-candy), you will need to know how to distribute points to conjure up a realistic Sim. The five traits with their opposites are:
- Neat/Messy
- Outgoing/Shy
- Active/Lazy
- Playful/Serious
- Nice/Grouchy
With your 25 points, you can distribute the points as you like. For each trait that has 1-3 points, it'll be negative. Between 4-7 points is balanced, and 8-10 is positive.
Neat/Messy
- (1-3 pts.) Your Sim lives in their own filth. Rarely cleaning up after themselves, they do the opposite--make more filth.
- (4-7 pts.) Probably like you or me, these Sims will clean up after themselves most of the time. At times, they will also clean up for others if no extra effort is necessary.
- (8-10 pts.) Also known as a neat-freak, these Sims will clean anything in sight. Scrubbing, flushing, and mopping up floors as well as cleaning dishes gobbles up most of their time.
Outgoing/Shy
- (1-3 pts.) Usually rejected from others, making friends is tough. Romance is another issue--make sure that the Zodiac Signs are working in your favor to make things spark. It's not always bad being shy--these types of Sims require less social interaction than more active Sims.
- (4-7 pts.) Sorta in the middle--not shy, but not social animals either.
- (8-10 pts.) People with ants in their pants, these Sims crave social activity. They build up their Charisma faster also, but you'd better stay in touch with some friends.
Active/Lazy
- (1-3 pts.) Being a couch potato, these Sims raise their fun by watching television or soaking in a hot tub. Waking up is also an issue--you might want to wake a lazy Sim up for work earlier than you would for a Sim that isn't as lazy.
- (4-7 pts.) Not being too wild nor dead.
- (8-10 pts.) Drawn to physical activities, such as basketball and such. Watching Action TV will also raise their fun level.
Playful/Serious
- (1-3pts.) Having fun means reading books and playing chess. Preferring more solemn activities, these serious Sims don't like to joke around.
- (4-7 pts.) Not attracted to all sorts of fun, these balanced Sims are more open than serious Sims. Some jokes may seem funny, but don't keep trying.
- (8-10 pts.) Party animals require a constant appetite of having fun which summarizes this type of Sim. Being crazy and crude is also part of their personality.
Nice/Grouchy
- (1-3 pts.) Making friends with a grouchy Sim is difficult. Lashing out at the smallest arguments, you wonder why would you even make friends with such a jerk. On the upside, they like to watch Horror on TV.
- (4-7 pts.) Balanced in this area will earn you more friends than a grouchy Sim. Having 5 points is what you want to aim for.
- (8-10 pts.) Befriending everyone is what you do. Ignore grouchy Sims that want to damage your self-esteem.
Zodiac Signs
By selecting a Zodiac Sign, you roughly summon the traits that shares it's sign. You can redistribute a few points here and there, but if you change it too much, you might change your Zodiac Sign.

Relations
In order to make friends in The Sims, you must have a score of 50 or more with that Sim. You'll know you'll have a new buddy by a smiley face appearing next to that Sim in your relationship panel. When you have 70 or more, chances of love open up. The following actions you do might escalate things to the next level, so be careful:
- Admire Body
- Air Kiss
- Bear Hug
- Booty Spank
- Dance Dirty
- Feather Tickle
- Flirt (well...DUH!)
- French Kiss
- Give Backrub
- Kiss
- Kiss Hand
- Kiss Romantically
- Serenade
- Slow Dance
- Smooth Talk
- Wolf Whistle
What about marriage/moving in? There are three circumstances:
- The other Sim is in love with your Sim
- The other Sim's mood is 35 or higher
- There is space in your household
If things go well, then congratualtions. If not, try again. NOTE! When playing Bustin' Out, don't bother marrying anyone who lives with you--they cannot be taken. Try some of the residents living down them Free Streets.
Motives
Pressing up on the D-Pad will show you the selected Sim's motives. How does it work? Each of the different motives, except Room, decay over time. You can replenish it by satisfying the motive that corresponds to that motive. Overall, if your motives are high, your mood will be positive. Conversely, if your motives are depleted, your mood will become crap. Avoid this at all costs.
What happens when your Sim is in a good mood? You get promoted in your career which gets you further into the game.
Hunger
Hunger is a steady depletion. The only way to slow this motive down is to sleep. Other than that, replenish this motive by eating. A refrigerator is absolutely necessary. A Sim can take out food from the fridge to prepare a meal or just to grab a quick snack. Without one, life will be hell. Sure you can buy a BBQ Grill or freeload off other people's cooking, but it just isn't the same. So what happens when you don't eat? It won't drag down your mood if you're not full, but will have dire effects when your Sim is starving. Don't even try to be depleted in this motive--it's game over for you once it does.
Hygiene
Hygiene usually decays gradually unless you are involved in messy activities. This includes, but not limited to, eating pizza, exercising, using a toilet, or not even going to a toilet at all. You can replenish this motive by showering or washing your hands. Technically, if you keep washing your hands after you've wet yourself until this motive is green again. Of course this wastes a lot of time--you should've showered in the first place. To save more time, avoid washing your hands after using the toilet--proceed to the shower if your hygiene is low. If you don't shower, you stink and that's pretty much it.
Energy
Sleep is needed by everyone, including the Sims. Naps and drinking coffee will raise your energy motive barely, so you'll just have to sleep without being disturbed in order to function correctly. Make sure a room with the bed has the absence of a TV, radio, computer, a telephone, or anything else that may wake a Sim up. If you choose to be a zombie, your Sim will just simply collapse and lay on the floor. You cannot wake your Sim up until they have regained a little energy, and it depletes their comfort quickly. Avoid this as well: swimming with no energy. Care to guess?
Social
The only way to satisfy this motive is simply talk, talk, talk! Get involved with group activities as well. After preparing a meal, grab a plate with another Sim, sit down and chat. You'll raise two motives this way. Although if you want to live a sad, lonely life, that can be accomplished as well, though not recommended. In fact, you should send your Sim off to work with a high Social motive--it will compensate for other motives.
Comfort
Replenishing this motive while doing other things is highly recommended. Eat sitting down in a comfy, comfy chair, buy an exepensive toilet, or sleep in a ten-thousand dollar bed.
Bladder
Need I say more? Find a toilet and empty your bladder, or just wet yourself a blue puddle for you to clean up.
Fun
Every Sim has their own insights on what they think is fun. Depending on your personality, you might want to read a book, play some video games, watch TV, or play basketball. Having a depleted fun motive renders you very unhappy, but still alive.
Room
This is the only motive that stays constant. In The Sims Busin' Out, a room is defined by any space surrounded by walls and/or doors. Outdoors are considered as a room, unless separated by a fence/wall. Having plants or decorative objects improve a room's score. Puddles, dirty dishes, dead flowers, deplete this motive.
Sprucing up the outside before going to work is a good way to improve your mood which ultimately leads to a promotion.
Things You Should Always Know
Bills
Bills arrive every three days. The price is determined by the percentage of the depreciated value of billable objects in your house. In order to pay bills, retrieve it from the mail box. Your Sim will place the bills on a surface. Pay it and watch your Sim shove the bills back into the mailbox, and you're all done. Now if my mail system worked that way...
Theft
The hot burglar will appear at night when everyone is sleeping or when there is no one in your house. She will grab one of the most valuable things in your house. To combat this, build a wall at the side of your lot and attach a burgular alarm to it--the alarm will self-activate as soon as the burglar appears.
Freewill
Freewill enables your Sim to wander off and about freely doing things on their own. Freewill can be turned on or off under the options screen. If you turn it off, you will have complete control over them. That's right--you can let your Sim just stand until they starve to death. So why bother even turning it off? Sims will automatically do things to raise their motives, which for the most part, extremely annoying. Another aspect is when the bus arrives to pick your Sim up to work. With freewill on, your Sim will automatically board the bus as soon as they can. With freewill off, you can send your Sim to work 50 minutes after the bus arrives to perform other chores. Take a hint.
Visit and Moving Out
Once you've found a home to stay at, you can visit other places. When you do though, certain actions are disabled, such as sleeping or napping.
Raising a Baby
If you choose to raise a baby, you cannot move out until the baby has matured into a child. In order to keep the Social Worker from appearing, do not let it cry for over 60 Sim minutes. Do this by performing all three actions to it--feeding, playing, and singing to it will fulfill its needs.
Jealousy
Sims get jealous if their lover is being seduced by someone else. Make sure to be in another room to score behind another Sim's back before doing so.
