The Yachtsman's Navigation Manual by Jeff Toghill.   Hardcover book published by Reed 1977, 256 pages with black and white photographs, diagrams, illustrations and maps.  Navigation by its very nature is a practical subject and learning it needs a practical approach. With this in mind, Jeff Toghill has set out to write a book from which navigation can be learned.  What is needed is a visual approach, avoiding as far as possible masses of figures and formulae which are an unnecessary obstacle to learning for the ordinary yachtsman. Another important aim is simplicity because most yachtsmen don't wish to wade through material which is applicable principally to big ships and professional navigators. While whittling things down to essentials, it is, or course, vital to maintain accuracy.  In this book, Jeff Toghill has succeeded admirably in achieving these goals. Every aspect of accurate navigation that might be needed by a yachtsman, whether making a ten mile coastal run or a ten thousand mile ocean voyage, is covered. The author moves from a consideration of basic equipment, the marine compass and charts to the details of laying off and plotting a course. There is a full discussion of the use of the sextant and all aspects of celestial navigation. For the ocean-going yachtsman the author has an excellent treatment of the value of great circle navigation, planning a long voyage and how to handle various problems met in far-off places. Other important points dealt with are electronic navigation (1977) -including radio, radar, Consol, Loran, Decca-weather, tides, safety and what to do in an emergency.  In keeping with the author's aims, The Yachtsman's Navigation Manual is fully illustrated with 178 photographs and over 130 line drawings and charts.  This book is in very good condition.  The dust jacket is in good condition.  There is wear to the edges (some creasing and scuffing), corners (some bumping and a few tiny rips on the corners) and to the top and bottom of the spine (minor creasing and tiny rips to the top).  There is some minor shelf wear overall as well as some minor marks and minor creasing.  The cover is in very good condition.  There is some wear to the edges (more to the bottom edges), corners and to the top and bottom of the spine.  The book itself is in very good condition.  There are a few marks and some foxing to the outer edges.  The front endpaper has a booksellers sticker on it.  There is some minor yellowing of the pages.  Overall a very good copy.
