French Country Authenticity

Traditonal hand-woven splint Farm Basket from the Charente-Poitou region of France.

This lovely  French country basket is a fine example of a traditional Charentaise hand woven splint farm basket.  This type of tightly woven basket has been used for generations for gathering the abundant  wild mushrooms,  fruit, vegetables, nuts and such found in this farming region of France. This traditionally made basket  is of  a 'classic' Charente shape. I have lived here in the Charente region now for over 10 years and have identified about 4 basic shapes of these old gathering baskets which of course have any number of 'variations'.

This basket  measures  15 inches long, 12 inches across at the handle and is 9  inches high including the bentwood handle which does have a sprinkling of tiny woodworm holes.   Otherwise this basket is in virtually Pristine vintage condition  showing little  evidence that it was  much used for the purpose for which it was made.

It is extremely rare to find one of these old baskets in such superbe condition.

The price of this basket reflects its exceptional condition.

As well this basket is very finely detailed--obviously made by a true craftsman and is of graceful and pleasing proportions.

Although it is impossible to date it precisely, it was likely made

sometime between about 1890-1930.

This really is one of those items I would like to keep for my own collection. It is lovely.

This beautiful basket would be a superb accent for a Country French decor

and of course would be a fine addition to any basket lovers collection.

~Please take time to read our Shipping and Insurance Information~

and our Pricing Notes and our 'Make an Offer' option

Shipping and Insurance: The shipping cost for this item to the US and Canada is $37.50. Ask for other destinations. Your item will be very carefully packed and shipped by French Post.

We ship by French Post  worldwide and in our first year on eBay, (we have a second store--see information below), we have shipped over 200 items to 15 countries without a loss. We make every effort to charge the actual cost with a tiny percentage for packing and handling, but because the dollar/euro/pound exchange rate constantly flucuates it is impossible to be absolutely precise. Shipping by French Post  has been 100% reliable so far. Very few of our clients actually request insurance and to date, all the items we have shipped here in France and abroad have arrived.

We do add, however, that naturally we cannot --and will not--be responsible for loss of, or damage to,  your un-insured items in transit. Your purchase of the above item assures us that you understand and agree to this policy. But again may I emphasize that we have had 100% success with French shipping and that the majority of our clients do not request insurance. If you do require insurance, please request rates.

We wish it were less expensive to ship and insure from France to the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and other international destinations, but we charge rates that reflect our actual costs, often-times absorbing some of the shipping costs ourselves. Many of the items we ship are bulky and/or fragile. We use only quality packaging materials which adds to our expense and we pride ourselves on our careful packing. It has been from the beginning, and continues to be, our policy not to profit on shipping charges and to keep them as reasonable as possible.

Returns: We hope, and even expect, that you will be satisfied with your purchase, but if for any reason you are not, please return the item in described condition within 14 days of receipt for a full refund of the purchase price. Shipping costs remain the responsibility of the buyer and returned items must be insured. So far we have had 100% satisfaction with our items from our other eBay store, French Vintage Linens and Antiques.

We hope our 100% customer satisfaction continues. To that end we make every effort to describe our items accurately and fully and to note any small flaws which are envitable in these vintage items

We welcome and encourage your questions before purchase. If you have any question at all about any of our items, please don't hesitate to ask.

Notes on our Pricing and our ‘Make an Offer’ option

We price our items according to our buy-in costs, (which are ever increasing for most of these items), as well as taking into account rarity, condition and demand for these vintage and antique French items. Also we must take into account our eBay and Paypal fees, packing materials costs, shipping costs from France worldwide which are almost always more than we charge--but eBay scolds us if  they think we charge too much--ie our actual shipping costs. Because of that  the shipping charge we post is almost always less than the amount shipping actually costs us. We do not complain about any of this.

We enjoy our business, and on the whole we think eBay is Wonderful,  but as well this is a ‘real’ business for us. We are a fully legal and licensed business in France which entails even more expense-- we pay fees for running a business and we actually report our eBay earnings and pay taxes on them.  Important to us is that our eBay business is an integral part of our livelihood so we work hard seeking out new things for our customers as well as doing all the admin. work necessary to running a business.

We know that eBay attracts many kinds of buyers for our items including knowledgeable collectors willing to pay ‘the going price’ for what they are seeking,  businesses like us who re-sell,  and especially many shoppers simply looking for special things for their home at reasonable prices.

We value all our customers.

That is why we include the ‘Make an Offer’ option on nearly all our items. Instead of posting ‘Sales’ from time to time we allow our customers to suggest to us what they are willing and/or  are able to pay for an item at any time.  We appreciate all offers made to us.  Sometimes we may make what we consider a reasonable counter-offer.
But always we consider ‘reasonable offers’ and almost always, we accept them.
By ‘reasonable’ we mean an offer that allows us to cover our costs and  also make a reasonable small profit. If we don’t, we won’t stay in business long.  From time to time, for example, we will have an offer of say $100 on an item we’ve priced at $350.00. Unfortunately, and we think evidently, we won‘t be able to accept that offer--but what we do want to emphasize is that
We Really Welcome Reasonable Offers.
If you often, or just occasionally, make offers on eBay, or if you never have, try us.  We think it is likely you have visited us because you are interested in the items we have for sale. We are in business to sell--and to have Happy Customers who find in our store just what they are looking for at a price they can afford!

Thank you so much for visiting us today.
