The Naga are an ancient tribal people found in the hills of Northeast India and parts of Burma. They have a rich tradition of textile weaving and are renowned for their flamboyant adornments for the body. Textile weaving is the preserve of women and is done using handspun cotton and sometimes hemp. The backstrap loom tension method (sometimes called Indonesian) is employed. After the cloth has been woven, small patches of embroidery are added using a porcupine needle.  A number of plant extracts are used to dye the cloth including indigo, mahogany and lacquer.

This textile is from the Chang tribe, Tuensang village and is worn as an indication of tribal belonging and status. It consists of 2 panels with embroidered motifs in red, charcoal and white with side stripes in charcoal and brown. The piece ends in knotted tassels.  It would make a dramatic wall decoration, floor rug or throw. The last series of photos show the Naga of various tribes from Nagaland. Please note that part of the charm of these tribal textiles is their organic hand made quality and that minor imperfections may be present. We do however carefully hand pick each piece to ensure the highest possible quality. Some textile galleries offer similar pieces for US$250-$350.

The Naga, of which there are several tribes, live in north-west India and on Burmese side of the border where there are about 100 000. The history of the Naga is not very clear but they are thought to be related to the Mongoloid Tibeto-Burman group.  Some anthropologists suggest that there is common ancestry with the Chin, a people living in the mountainous regions of Chin state, Burma. The Naga are known for their strength, stamina and fierceness in battle and have a rich tradition of textile weaving.  The Naga use textiles with different patterns to show the person's social status, hunting experience and wealth. Both men and women are very fond of ornaments and wear a wide range of adornments including bronze and brass armlets and anklets, heavy earrings, necklaces in bronze, shell, precious stones and boar tusks.  Textile weaving is the preserve of women.  In a fast changing world the Naga remain one of the most colourful ethic minorities on the planet and for the most part remain faithful to their traditional way of life.
