To see our antique tribal jewellery, please Google sabai designs gallery The Karen have lived in Burma for centuries and began migrating to Thailand at the end of the 18th century, crossing the Salween river to flee persecution and oppression within Burma. The Karen continue to migrate from Burma into Thailand to this day. As well as silversmiths, the Karen are outstanding weavers. The last three photos in the series are of Karen women taken in their villages. Please see below for dimensions and shipping costs.
The Karen are known for their desire for harmony within their culture and this is a basic theme of the Sgaw and Pwo groups. The highly effective fallow system that they developed in their agriculture demonstrates their desire for harmony with their environment. The annual celebrations in which they provide feasts for the guardian spirits of the village shows their respect for these unseen powers. The Karen seek to maintain harmony within the village by respecting the wisdom of their village leaders and respecting their neighbors by avoiding conflict wherever possible. In Karen culture the year is 2747 and BC739 is thought to be the year of their founding. While their origins are vague, some believe them to lie in Tibet and the Gobi Desert. The 'Lord of Land and Water', who possesses all of the water, rocks, trees, paddies and swiddens in a given area, is the most important spiritual force that the Karen contend with as a village and offerings are regularly made at the shrine. A typical prayer at the time of rice planting is: 'Water Lord, Country Lord, Hill Lord, Mountain Lord, come down! Lord of Laykawkey village, Lord of Laykawkey stream, send us good rice, send us sparse weeds...'
