Two RCA Impac drive-in speakers and an Eprad junction box (holder)
DESCRIPTION: Here are two RCA Impac plastic drive-in theatre speakers and an Eprad speaker holder (junction box). They are the brand and model advertised by a young Natalie Wood. Natalie advertsied these speakers in this publicity shot from the late 1950's. Natalie, the car and the other items in the shot are not for sale here! Just the speakers and junction box in the other shots. These speakers were installed at the Cloudland drive-in theatre in country SA, I purchased them from the owner of the drive-in when it closed. RCA Impacs are a rare speaker, as they are plastic and did not survive the rigeurs of drive-in use. These are from the "what were they thinking" file as their life-span was very short. It is amazing any have survived from the late 1950's at all. The shells of these are brittle, but they are complete and represent a good oportunity to add to a collection. Have you ever seen plastic drive-in speakers before?
CONDITION: The speakers and junction box are in used condition, and would require restoration to work perfectly, but they come complete. Remember they have hung in the weather for several decades. These ones do have some surface blemishes, small cracks and bleaching and are delicate. One has a metal replacement hook, the other an original plastic hook. I have about two dozen of these all with giant holes in the plastic so don't miss out on the last few intact items. The juction box may have some rust to the terminals on the inside.
RESTORATION: Replacement speakers to install inside the shell can be obtained from Jaycar Electronics stores located Australia wide and their website for around $4.00 each. The existing units would be well worn. At drive-ins, we replaced them every few years to ensure the sound quality was maintained. Volume controls can also be bought from jaycar.
The juction box can be mounted to a pole or post and the speakers hang from it. I have a pair of drive-in speakers in the backyard hanging from the junction box on a pole, they are wired up so I can have background music playing - just like before the show! or listen to football etc.
These classic speakers look fantastic hanging on your Dodge Phoenix, Chev Imparla, Edsel, Cadillac, Buick, Plymouth, Oldmobile or other classic car. Hang them on the window and just wait for the comments! Not too many brands of speaker were advertised by a Hollywood movie star!
Long gone are the days when you could grab a drive-in speaker at any auto swap meet at $20 each especially RCA Impacs. Due to there construction they simply did not survive. If you just want a speaker for old times sake, buy a metal one, but if you are a collector or are looking for something that will be even rarer in future buy these. How many times have you ever seen a plastic drive-in speaker, on ebay or elsewhere?
Please ask any questions you may have about these speakers and I'll be happy to answer them.
