New: A new book
As New: The book is in mint condition - like new
Excellent: The book has been read once or twice with care but is almost as new
Very Good: Well cared for book with a tight spine but may have some scuffing of cover and dust soiled exterior. It can not pass for a new book but is still in excellent condition.
Good: It is used but still in reasonable condition, pages are clear but may have mild age-yellowing. Spine may not be tight but is not in danger of falling apart. Exterior dust or shelf soiled.
Well Used: Structurally sound (pages are not falling out, torn or missing). Cover scuffed, may have tears and possibly faded. Pages intact but aged. Spine is intact but no longer tight. Book may have marks or notations but is still totally readable. Most have names and bookstore rubberstamps on flyleaf and/or title page. Will function as a reading or reference copy but is not recommended for collecting.
Read and discard: The book is not structurally sound but there are no lost pages – We discard books in this condition but will occasionally list if it is rare. These books are definitely not recommended for collection or even restoration.
Aged: Applies to the age-yellowing of pages. Most papers used, regardless of quality, will yellow over time, some evenly but others may develop stains or blotches due to the acid in the paper. This can, and will, occur regardless of how well the book has been cared for and can only be avoided by storing in a controlled environment.
Mild Ageing means that flyleaves are obviously yellowed but pages are only slightly discoloured
Very Aged and you can expect both discolouration and blotched acid stains on pages.
