MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a protocol that allows digital musical instruments to transfer data to other electronic devices and musical instruments. MIDI has rapidly come to be accepted as a standard across the industry. MIDI enables connections between drum machines, synthesizers, sound cards and controllers, and allows them to control and synchronize with each other.

MIDI devices don’t transmit any audio signals. Instead, they send MIDI messages that are basically commands to control and trigger specific functions in devices that are connected. The commands that can be transmitted include the intensity at which the note needs to be played, the tempo at which the piece needs to be set, etc.

These signals are sent across with the help of MIDI cable. When a computer needs to be attached to one of these devices, a MIDI cable cannot be used because computers don’t have an input port to accept a MIDI cable. Until now, the only option was to use a MIDI convertor, which can accept a MIDI signal on one hand and can provide an output that can be sent to the computer through a USB port.
