I was going through some more boxes in my garage, actually looking for the U.V. clarifier for my pond, when I found another box of books and manuals. Back in the mid 1980's there was a pro underwater photo shop called "The Creative Whale" owned and operated by Dick Jacoby. He was one of the best known photo instructors in the country, and ran courses at the original indoor reef at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago (THAT was an interesting dive!!)
Later Dick and I worked for the same scuba training facility. Dick was creating a series of video and photo courses, and had written books for each course (I sold the dozen or so copies of his famous Nikonos IV a few months back.) Well, in this box were copies of his originlal video guide. Dick did this on his typewriter, then photocopied and put them in report binders. I assisted in a few classes, and worked at the shop for a while. I totally forgot about all this until I unearthed these books.
66 pages long (one sided, so it's also 66 sheets,) it's written with the beginner in mind. Sure some of the equipment terminology is a bit dated, especially since video equipment has shrunk faster than we thought possible back then (waaaay back in 1985.)
Chapters:
- Overview
- Video Selection (the dated part)
- Artificial Light
- Getting ready (including pool prep)
- Focus and color
- Shooting in open water
- Producing the show (also a little dated, as it is pre-PC editing)
- Glossary of terms
You still won't find a better book covering style and technique, how-to, the basics and more!
